Iranian Female Mountaineer on the Brink of Making History
WANA (May 25) – An Iranian female mountaineer has successfully climbed her 13th 8,000-meter peak, placing her just one summit away from a historic achievement.
Afsaneh Hessamifard, a skilled Iranian doctor and climber, reached the summit of Kangchenjunga— the world’s third-highest mountain at 8,586 meters — yesterday.
This marks the 13th of the world’s 14 highest peaks that Dr. Hessamifard has conquered. With only one more climb to go, she is poised to become the first Iranian woman to join the elite group of climbers who have summited all 14 of the world’s 8,000-meter mountains.
So far, she has successfully ascended Everest, Lhotse, K2, Broad Peak, Annapurna, Nanga Parbat, Gasherbrum I, Gasherbrum II, Makalu, Manaslu, Shishapangma, Dhaulagiri, and now Kangchenjunga. The only peak remaining is Cho Oyu, which stands at 8,188 meters.
Among Iranian men, only Azim Gheichisaz has previously completed all 14 eight-thousanders.
